Alstom to establish manufacturing facility in Portugal

Alstom will establish a new train manufacturing facility in Porto region, with 20.000 sqm, creating close to 300 skilled jobs, including engineering, technical and skilled trades roles. The investment is part of a €1.03 billion contract with Comboios de Portugal (CP) to supply 153 Adessia Stream trains. In 2022, Alstom established an engineering site in the region, that has been developing cutting-edge digital mobility and signalling solutions for both Portugal and international projects.
Stadler announces joint venture with Critical Software

Portuguese tech company Critical Software and Swiss rail manufacturer Stadler have launched Stadler Digital Labs (STADL), a new joint venture focused on railway software, cybersecurity, and digital solutions, with offices in Coimbra and Lisbon, kicking off with 100 employees and expecting to grow to 300 within three years.
Digital Realty’s data centre investment in Portugal

US-based data centre platform developer Digital Realty announced its expansion to Portugal through the acquisition of a facility in Lisbon region. The site, with a capacity of up to 2.4 MW, is located near key subsea cable landings, strengthening the company’s Southern European footprint and global connectivity. With 16 subsea cables mooring in Portugal, Lisbon acts as a major Atlantic gateway linking Europe to the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The facility will connect to Digital Realty’s campuses in Accra, Lagos, and Cape Town, reinforcing Europe–Africa digital corridors.

Cortizo is building a new factory in Chaves

Spanish aluminium and PVC solutions manufacturer Cortizo is building a €100 million factory in Chaves, northern Portugal, expected to create 100 direct jobs initially, with phased growth up to around 450 employees. In November 2025, Cortizo had inaugurated a €5.5 million logistics centre in Vila do Conde.

Portugal's bike industry exports reach new record

Portugal’s bike industry exports reached €777.1 million in 2025, setting a new record and surpassing the previous peak in 2022, according to ABIMOTA, the industry’s association. After slight declines in 2023 and 2024, exports rose again in 2025 with a 4.26% increase, reflecting the sector’s resilience, competitiveness, and strong international demand. According to Industry experts, this record performance reflects continued investment in innovation, skill development, and internationalisation by Portuguese companies.
FDI in Portugal: stock, flows and main sources

Portugal recorded €8.5 billion in FDI inflows in 2025, with outward investment at €6.7 billion, according to Banco de Portugal. By the end of 2025, total FDI stock rose to €213.7 billion (70% of GDP), an increase of 70.3% since 2015. Top ultimate investors are France, the U.S. and the UK. FDI remains geographically concentrated in Greater Lisbon, followed by the Norte region.
FT ranking: Europe’s leading start-up hubs 2026

Portugal has 12 start-up hubs ranked among Europe’s leading start-up hubs in 2026 according to the Financial Times, five more than last year. Unicorn Factory (24th), Lispolis (32nd), Fintech House (35th) and Startup Braga (36th) are the highest-ranked Portuguese hubs.
Portugal: the lowest greenhouse gas footprint in the EU
According to Eurostat, Portugal had the lowest greenhouse gas footprint per capita among EU countries in 2023, at just 6.5 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per person, well below the EU average.
