JYSK opens new tech hub in Portugal

Scandinavian home furnishing retailer JYSK has announced the opening of a new tech hub in Lisbon to enhance its IT capabilities and improve customer shopping experience. The hub will support JYSK’s existing IT departments in Handewitt and Aarhus, with a focus on developing and implementing new IT solutions. Lisbon was chosen for its cultural alignment, abundance of technical talent, high proficiency in English and a convenient time zone.

Portugal breaks record in patent applications
Portugal set a new record in innovation with 347 patent applications according to the Patent Index 2024, of the European Patent Office - a 4.8% increase from the previous year. This growth outpaced the EU-27 average, which saw a 0.4% decline. The main technology fields are computer-related, medical, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.
Portugal leads in R&D tax incentives
Portugal ranks among the most competitive country for R&D tax incentives, according to Ayming’s The Benchmark 2025. Its R&D tax credit scheme, SIFIDE, offers a base rate of 32.5% for tax deduction from taxable income on R&D expenses. In addition, an incremental rate of 50% is applied to the increase in R&D expenses compared to the average of the previous two years, up to a limit of €1.5 million. Unused tax credits can be carried forward for 12 years. New SMEs benefit from a 15% base rate increase, and eco-design R&D expenses may qualify at 120%.
