Portugal’s fashion industry will take centre stage at the United Nations in New York on 10 September, with the “Made to Matter: Portugal” initiative taking place alongside New York Fashion Week.
Organised by APICCAPS and CENIT/ANIVEC, with the support of AICEP, the event aims to strengthen the international profile of Portugal’s fashion sector and showcase an industrial model combining quality, innovation, expertise and sustainability.
With more than 6,000 companies and exports exceeding €7 billion, the sector is one of Portugal’s leading export industries. Over the past three years, it has mobilised more than €200 million in investment, supported by Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), focusing on innovation, digitalisation, new materials, sustainability and production modernisation.
The event will be held as part of the annual meeting of the United Nations Fashion and Lifestyle Network and will bring together representatives from the Portuguese industry, technology centres, designers and international organisations. Speakers will include César Araújo, Executive Committee Chairman of the Lusitano Project consortium, Luís Onofre, President of APICCAPS, and Carlos Moura, AICEP's Trade and Investment Director in USA.
The programme will also feature a showcase of Portuguese designers’ work and materials, alongside discussions on technical innovation, new materials, sustainability and collaboration across the value chain.
The initiative aims to strengthen Portugal’s position as a competitive, innovative and internationally focused fashion ecosystem, with the United States identified as a strategic market for the sector.
