From academic research to global leadership in semiconductor engineering, Synopsys’s journey in Portugal reflects one of the most successful examples of knowledge transfer to the technology sector. With over 900 professionals in Lisbon and Porto, the company plays a strategic role in developing solutions for artificial intelligence, data centres, mobility and next-generation automotive systems.
Synopsys’ presence in Portugal is rooted in a unique technological legacy dating back to 1997, when Professor José Epifânio da Franca founded Chipidea Microelectrónica. Originating in academic research at the Instituto Superior Técnico, Chipidea became one of Portugal’s most successful examples of transferring scientific knowledge to the technology industry.
After Chipidea Microelectrónica was integrated into MIPS Technologies in 2007, Synopsys acquired the microelectronics business in Portugal in 2009, contributing to Synopsys’ success as a global leader in engineering solutions for innovation from silicon to systems. Since then, the local operation has grown steadily and now employs over 900 professionals across its centres in Lisbon and Porto.
