The new SOLAS 3.0 Science Plan (2026–2035) sets out international research priorities for the next decade on ocean–atmosphere interactions.
Catarina V. Guerreiro, a researcher at MARE and Ciências ULisboa and a collaborator of IDL, contributed to the plan and co-coordinated its Discovery Science component, focused on the physical, chemical and biogeochemical interactions between the ocean and atmosphere.
The plan, developed through almost three years of international collaboration, also includes Science Towards Solutions and Scientific Community and Skill Development. It highlights integrated research combining observations, experiments, remote sensing, autonomous platforms and modelling, alongside emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Guerreiro’s research contributes to these priorities through work on ocean–atmosphere processes, planktonic communities and biogeochemical cycles, including research on ocean alkalinity enhancement and its implications for the carbon cycle.
