Portugal Film Commission took part in the Annecy International Animation Film Market (MIFA), held in France from 23 to 26 June. Widely recognised as the world’s leading marketplace for the animation industry, MIFA once again brought together professionals from across the globe.
MIFA is the industry programme of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which this year honoured two productions with Portuguese involvement. Decorado, a feature film directed by Alberto Vázquez and co-produced by Sardinha em Lata, received the Paul Grimault Award, while Because Today Is Saturday, a short film by Alice Eça Guimarães, won the Annecy City Special Award. The festival programme also featured a further seven films produced or co-produced with Portugal.
As part of the market, the Portuguese Spotlight Pitch showcased five Portuguese projects, giving them the opportunity to be presented to potential partners and international industry professionals. In parallel, two additional Portuguese projects took part in MIFA’s short film pitching sessions, further expanding their opportunities for international exposure and financing.
The Portuguese programme also included networking and promotional activities at the stand dedicated to Portuguese animation, organised by the Portuguese Animation Producers Association (APPA) and Casa da Animação. On 24 June, the Portuguese stand also hosted an industry reception, bringing together animation professionals for an informal networking event.
Portugal was previously in the spotlight at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2024, with a special programme celebrating Portuguese animation through film screenings, pitching sessions, talks, masterclasses and a range of other activities.
