Alphabet's Google has successfully connected its new Nuvem transatlantic subsea cable to Sines, Portugal, strengthening digital connectivity between the United States and Europe as demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence services continues to accelerate.
Named after the Portuguese word for "cloud", the Nuvem cable links Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with Sines, south of Lisbon, via Bermuda and the Azores.
The system spans approximately 7,000 km (4,350 miles) and comprises 16 fibre pairs, with a total design capacity of around 384 terabits per second.
According to Giorgia Abeltino, Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Google Cloud EMEA, the Nuvem project forms part of Google's broader vision to support Portugal and Europe through strategic investment in the digital infrastructure underpinning the modern economy.
Subsea cables carry more than 95% of global internet traffic, making them essential to international communications, cloud services and data exchange.
The new connection further reinforces Portugal's position as a strategic digital connectivity hub. Sines is already home to two other major high-capacity subsea cable systems: Equiano, owned by Google, which connects Portugal to South Africa via the west coast of Africa, and EllaLink, which provides a direct link between Portugal and Brazil.
