Based on data from Euromonitor International and official tourism sources, the study compares international visitor numbers with local population figures to assess tourism intensity across global destinations.
Porto placed 5th globally, with approximately 7 million international visitors compared to a population of around 250,000 (equivalent to roughly 2,800 tourists per 100 residents). Lisbon also features in the ranking, placing 8th, with around 10.4 million visitors.
The results highlight Porto’s growing international visibility and attractiveness, driven by its cultural heritage, gastronomy and overall quality of experience for visitors.
While such rankings reflect strong tourism demand, they also underline the importance of sustainable tourism management and balanced urban development, ensuring that growth continues to benefit both residents and the local economy.
This recognition reinforces Porto’s position as a globally recognised destination, contributing to its broader appeal as a city to visit, live and invest.
