Stadler Digital Labs (STADL) has officially begun operations as a joint venture between the Swiss train manufacturer and Portuguese technology firm Critical Software. The company will specialise in digital engineering solutions, safety-critical systems, and cybersecurity for rail, supporting Stadler’s global operations.
The new entity combines the manufacturer’s rail industry expertise with Critical Software’s experience in developing certifiable, safety-critical systems. No further financial details or client projects were disclosed in the announcement. Rogério Gomes, CEO of Stadler Digital Labs, said the joint venture reflects a strategic alignment between the two companies on innovation and modernisation in rail. “The collaboration will allow the combination of engineering and innovation know-how from both organisations,” he said.
Headquartered in Coimbra with a hub in Lisbon, STADL starts with a team of 100 engineers and plans to expand to 300 employees by 2029. The initiative creates new opportunities for engineers in Portugal, offering roles in advanced software development and complex system design within the rail domain.
