The textile and clothing industry (TCI) is a traditional sector. Considered one of Portugal's oldest industries, it has a valuable legacy and has evolved and modernised over time. Today, it is internationally recognised for its quality and expertise. Currently, the Portuguese TCI sector stands out within the European landscape. Portugal is the EU’s third largest employer in this sector and the fifth most important market in terms of turnover.
Portugal is home to the largest textile hub in Europe. The textile and clothing cluster is characterised by a highly pronounced geographical concentration of companies which have settled in the country's north for various reasons. Few other regions in Europe share these characteristics. Tâmega e Sousa, Vale do Ave, Cávado and Porto are the epicentres of this industry. Consequently, several stages of the value chain are located within just a few dozen kilometres, offering advantages in terms of versatility and enabling the delivery of comprehensive and competitive solutions.
The sector's dynamism has been remarkable, and its ability to reinvent itself has played a key role in its growing prominence on the global stage. Portugal is already regarded as a hub of knowledge, innovation and production in textiles and clothing.
