Last year, Portugal was the third largest producer of tomatoes in the EU, behind Italy and Spain, according to data released today by the EU's statistics office, Eurostat. Data published by Eurostat on the 2024 harvests reveal that Portugal was the third-largest producer of tomatoes (1.7 million tonnes), behind Italy (6 million tonnes) and Spain (4.5 million tonnes).
Overall, the EU harvested 62.2 million tonnes of fresh vegetables (including melons) last year, which is a 6% increase on the 58.8 million tonnes harvested in 2023. According to the statistics office, Spain (14.8 million tonnes), Italy (13.9 million tonnes) and France (5.8 million tonnes) were the main producers of fresh vegetables in the EU, accounting for 55% of the total harvest.
