China and EU strengthen digital ties at Web Summit
The China–EU Digital Services Cooperation Seminar took place this morning (12th November) during the Web Summit, bringing together government representatives, trade officials and industry leaders to discuss the future of collaboration in digital innovation.
The seminar aimed to serve as a bridge between China and the European Union, encouraging the exchange of opportunities and the promotion of joint initiatives to foster growth and technological progress.
Bin Hu, Minister Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Portugal, underlined the embassy’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in the digital sphere. “We are dedicated to fostering deeper integration of innovative forces, working together to advance digital cooperation,” he said.
Guangyao Zhu, Deputy Head of the Department of Service Trade at the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, highlighted how digital innovation has reshaped society and global trade. “China is an important player in the trade of digital services, implementing technologies such as cloud computing, blockchain and artificial intelligence,” he stated. Zhu emphasised that collaboration between China and the EU could generate powerful synergies, remarking, “The future is not a cake to be shared but a garden to cultivate together.”
Representing Portugal, Joana Gaspar, Executive Board Member of AICEP (Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency), reiterated the agency’s mission to support companies, investors and innovators. “AICEP has a strong presence in China, with offices in Beijing, Macao and Shanghai,” she noted. “China is one of Portugal’s most relevant trading partners, with a diversified export base that is increasingly focused on digital and technological industries.”
Joana Gaspar added that Chinese investment in Portugal amounts to around 11 billion euros, with significant participation in sectors such as energy, finance and healthcare. She stressed that both countries are “committed to creating value together” and that AICEP’s goal is “to turn this shared vision into practical cooperation.”
Promoting Portugal as a dynamic and innovative environment, Joana Gaspar highlighted the country’s world-class digital infrastructure, robust cybersecurity framework and leadership in clean energy.
The session concluded with a discussion panel titled “The Next Chapter of China–EU Collaboration”, reaffirming the importance of trust, synergy and shared purpose in building the digital future together.
The China–EU Digital Services Cooperation Seminar underscored the value of international dialogue and collective effort in shaping the global digital landscape.
