Vélez-Málaga-based fruit cooperative Trops has expanded its operations in Portugal with a €9 million investment in a new facility located in Tavira, in the Algarve region. The expansion represents a key step in the cooperative's broader international strategy.
The new facility spans approximately 7,200 square meters and is designed to allow for local grading and packing of fruit, which was previously transported to Spain for processing. By handling these operations in Portugal, the company aims to increase logistical efficiency and reduce shipping times.
Trops currently collaborates with 120 Portuguese growers, contributing to a broader network of more than 4,000 farmers across the Iberian Peninsula. The company reported €30 million in revenue from Portuguese avocado production during the most recent season. The expansion in Tavira is also expected to create up to 30 new jobs.
According to General Director Víctor Luque, the investment is intended to support the consolidation of avocado production across the peninsula and enhance local grower support. The Tavira site joins a series of Trops operations across Spain, including in Valencia, Cádiz, Huelva, and the Guadalhorce valley.
Looking ahead, the cooperative plans to invest between €30 million and €40 million over the next few years to expand its infrastructure further.
