On 2 July, the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka hosted the workshop "Advancing Collaboration in the Digital Sector", an initiative of the INPACE project, which is funded by the European Commission's Horizon Europe programme.
The event aimed to strengthen digital collaboration between Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, focusing on strategic topics such as next-generation connectivity (5G and 6G), cybersecurity, digital collaboration, and Cloud-Edge-IoT technologies applied to the smart industry.
Joana Gomes Cardoso, Portugal's Commissioner-General, emphasised the role of the Expo 2025 as a platform to promote dialogue and the sharing of best practices between European countries. She emphasised the maritime history between Portugal and Japan, the importance of Expo 98, and the commitment to sustainability, particularly regarding the ocean. She also emphasised the need to look to the future with dialogue, hope, and enthusiasm.
Sara Medina, Administrator of the Portuguese Innovation Society (SPI), discussed the next generation of connectivity, covering the advances from 5G to 6G, as well as the importance of security coverage and the Internet of Things (IoT) for smart industries.
Speaking at the Expo for the first time, Lee Woolgar, the European Commission's representative in Japan, reinforced the importance of the EU's digital partnerships. He highlighted topics such as semiconductors, the exchange of information between the EU and Japan, and the importance of technology and innovation for the future.
The workshop featured several experts from various organisations, including Alessandro Bassi (Eurescom), Masahiro Bessho (Tokyo University), Rob van Kranenburg (Martel Innovate), Christopher Price (Ericsson Japan), Hideaki Takahashi (Nokia), and Judit Erika Magyar (Euraxess Japan).
The session ended with an informal networking event, which encouraged the creation of synergies between the participants and reinforced the links between Europe and the Indo-Pacific region in the digital sector.
The INPACE project is co-financed by the European Union's Horizon Europe programme and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), with the mission of establishing a sustainable centre for digital collaboration between these two strategic regions.
Portugal thus reaffirms its role as a link between Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, promoting technological and digital cooperation at a crucial time for global development. Participation in the workshop 'Advancing Collaboration in the Digital Sector' reinforces Portugal's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and strengthening international partnerships within the context of Expo 2025 Osaka.
