Portugal's national grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) announced on Monday that the country's renewable power plants produced 36.7 TWh, enough clean electricity to meet 71% of the national demand in 2024.
Hydropower was the largest contributor, meeting 28% of the overall demand. Wind power covered 27% in the same period, followed by solar (10%) and biomass (6%), according to data by REN.
In the same period, Portugal registered yearly power generation increases of 24% in hydropower and 37% in photovoltaics (PV).
Non-renewable production and imported energy covered 10% and 20% of the remaining consumption, respectively. Imports reached their highest level ever recorded in the national electricity system.
