According to the Portugal Business News, the transatlantic subsea cable system Nuvem, named after the Portuguese word for “cloud,” will connect Portugal, Bermuda, and the United States. Google has just announced that they are working to extend the submarine cable system to the Azores.
The Nuvem submarine cable will improve network resiliency across the Atlantic and will help establish its landing locations in Portugal as a digital hub.
The Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal that is around 1,400 km west of Lisbon, are currently linked to the mainland via Altice’s Columbus-III Azores-Portugal system since 1999. The SMART Atlantic CAM (Continent - Azores - Madeira), also known as the New CAM Ring submarine cable, is expected to go live in 2026.
While a new report by German company DE-CIX shows that Portugal is the best interconnection hub globally, the PISCES subsea telecoms cable, that will provide direct connectivity between Portugal, Spain, France, and Ireland, is funded by the EU under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
