Portugal is looking to develop an offshore aquaculture industry, and Israel-based aquaculture technology company Mariculture Systems hopes its project will be the first approved to operate in the country.
The company is current working to develop a 7,000 - 8,000 metric ton offshore sea bass and sea bream farm along the country’s southern coast, with an expected annual revenue of €50 million ($53 million).
Portugal has taken a pivotal stance in the blue economy, including investments in shipping innovation and offshore wind, but it also wants a strong position in aquaculture, Peter Beringer, Mariculture Systems Portugal director, told IntraFish.
