The US is the main destination for Portuguese extra-EU exports of goods.
In 2022, it accounted for 21 % of these exports. The average effective tariff applied by the US on Portuguese exports remained relatively stable between 2014 and 2022. In the latter year, it was 3.5 per cent, close to the UK and China, lower than Angola and higher than Canada.
Tariffs on imports of goods are one of the barriers to international trade. Portugal's membership of the European Union ensures that intra-Community trade (which accounts for more than 60 per cent of Portuguese goods exports) does not face such barriers. In a context of increasing weight of extra-EU exports of goods and protectionist policies at a global level, it is important to monitor the evolution of tariffs and their impact on Portuguese trade.
