Portuguese cork exports reached a record 670.4 million euros in the first half of the year, up 3.2% from the first half of 2022, the Portuguese Cork Association (APCOR) reported on Monday.

For APCOR, this development is even more significant as the exported volumes decreased by 15% over this period, showing that this increase is due to the added value of the products.

"At a difficult time in terms of demand, the sector managed to grow in value as a result of a combination of factors, firstly through a mix of higher value-added products, but also through all the work that the sector has done in favour of increasing the technical performance of its products and the international promotion of cork," said the association's secretary-general, João Rui Ferreira.

However, he emphasised that there has been a slowdown in growth over the year, and the association does not expect to “change this slowdown” in the second half of the year.
