German energy major RWE AG on Monday announced the commissioning of its first solar farm in Portugal, a 46-MW facility located in Morgavel, Sines, in the southern part of the country.

Consisting of 91,000 bifacial solar modules, the solar park will generate electricity equivalent to the needs of 42,000 Portuguese households.

The project expands RWE’s activities in Iberia, where it has 300 MW of solar capacity spread across six projects in operation and one under construction. The company also has 500 MW of onshore wind farms in operations on the Iberian Peninsula.

Omexom Portugal was responsible for building the solar plant, while Construcao e Manutencao Eletromecanica (CME) was in charge of the substation and the connection to the electrical grid.

The solar park will be helping Portugal achieve its recently ramped up energy targets to 85% renewable electricity by 2030, Katja Wuenschel of RWE Renewables remarked on Linkedin.
