In the in the first half of 2022, 157,121 vehicles left the Portuguese assembly plants, an increase of 3.2% compared to the same period in 2021. In accumulated terms, Autoeuropa produced 72.4% of the total number of automotive units, with 113,678 vehicles, compared to 36,853 units at Stellantis (23.5%).
On the other hand, Stellantis was the plant with the greatest growth in automobile production, with an 8% increase. Autoeuropa only saw a rise of 1.2%, the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP) announced on Monday.
In June 2022, 38,692 vehicles were produced, an increase of more than double (139.3%) on a year-on-year (YoY) basis. Of that amount, Autoeuropa produced 29,859 motor vehicles (77.2% of the total), which represents a rise in production of 174.2% YoY. In comparison, the Stellantis plant in Mangualde saw an increase of 76.5% in its production, reaching 7,316 units (18.9% of the total).
Of the total number of vehicles manufactured in Portugal during the first six months of the year, 97.4% (153,025) of these units are destined for export, and although this figure represents a growth of 2.6% YoY, the difference in this category is more expressive in the figures for June. In the sixth month of the year, 96.2% (37,236) of the auto production was for exports, and this represented an increase in production of 141.5% compared to June 2021.
“Europe remains the leading market for exports of vehicles manufactured in Portugal (93.3%) with Germany (21.9%), France (15.4%), Italy (12.5%) and Spain (9.1%) topping the ranking,” According to the ACAP statement.
Regarding the assembly of heavy motor vehicles, 35 units were assembled in June 2022, which represents an increase of 94.4% in year-on-year terms. In cumulative terms, meanwhile, the first half of the year saw a 46.8% drop compared to the same period in 2021, with a total of 66 vehicles assembled. “For the sixth consecutive month in 2022, only heavy passenger vehicles were assembled,” ACAP adds.
Within the segment of heavy motor vehicles made in Portugal, 48.5% of the units produced, or 32 vehicles, were exported. Europe represents the only destination for these vehicles, ACAP adds, with Germany representing 59.4% of the final destination of these exports, while the United Kingdom 40.6%.
