A centuries-old tradition the festival involves adorning the streets, especially in the historic centre, with thousands of paper flowers.

The street flower festival in Campo Maior, in the district of Portalegre, was classified on Wednesday as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).


The inscription as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Portuguese community festivals, in the town of Campo Maior, in the Alentejo region, was approved at the 16th meeting of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee, which is being held in Paris (France).
