Portugal-based Sonae announced its food retail category sales increased by 5.4%, in H1 2019 and it expects a turnover of 5.5% to 6%. Meanwhile, the group plans to invest €725m towards store expansions, maintenance and improvements, by 2021.

Expansion strategy

 

Sonae MC claims it expects the Portuguese market to be one of the fastest growing in Europe. The group currently operates 173 Continente hypermarkets and supermarkets. The company has announced growth is priority for the future, it plans to introduce up to 60 Continente Bom Dia supermarkets and eight Continente Modelo supermarkets over three years.

 

Maintenance and improvements

 

Sonae has proposed to develop its ecommerce and in store digital experience. The group plans to enhance the online and offline offers, with improved new categories.

 

The online channel has improvements to allow nationwide delivery and has introduced over 100 click and collect zones.

 

Separately, the group is operating a store proximity programme, to deliver its strategic goals. In April 2019, it opened a new ultra-proximity store, which Sonae optimised its operating model, which includes self-service checkouts.
