SISCOG's CREWS-based system, an advanced tool that includes Operations Research, helps to reschedule the Dutch Railways' (NS) crew and cope with extreme weather conditions.

In an article from Impact Magazine, Pieter-Jan Fioole, Senior Research Leader, and Dennis Huisman, Expertise Manager Logistic Processes, both from the Department of Process Quality & Innovation at Netherlands Railways, explain how advanced Operations Research tools are used to reschedule crew and rolling stock. And how these are vital to successfully implement a more robust timetable in case of extreme weather predictions.


They explain how CREWS' algorithms are prepared to act according to the situation. In the long-term planning, the focus is on optimality and large numbers of duties can be scheduled, while in dispatching the algorithm focusses on feasibility and limited computation time.
