Chui Sai On met the press to take stock of the official visit to Portugal by a Macau government delegation, said that this visit was not only a continuation and demonstration of the progress of the friendship between the two territories, but also the start of a new phase.
The Chief Executive recalled that during his stay in Portugal he met with the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and António Costa respectively, visited the ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Portugal, Cai Run, and with the Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, presided over the 6th meeting of the Macau-Portugal Joint Commission.
Chui Sai On said that the visit to Portugal was very significant because it is an important year, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the PRC, the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal, as well as the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region.
The Chief Executive noted that Macau has benefited from its specific advantages as a result of its relationship with Portugal to carry out the role of a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, notably within the framework of the “Belt and Road” initiative and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay.
Chui Sai On also recalled that at the meeting with the President of the Portuguese Republic he expressed that both Portuguese-Chinese cooperation and cooperation between Macau and Portugal were experiencing an excellent phase and hoped for links between the two territories to be extended, especially in the economic and commercial, cultural, tourist and educational areas.
