Portugal's exports of goods increased 4.1% in January, slowing down in yearly terms, and imports shot up 16.6% in the same period, mainly due to the purchase of aircraft, according to the country's national statistics institute (INE) on Tuesday.

According to the institute, imports increased 16.6%, after the 8.1% rise in December 2018, highlighting the additions of transport material in 36.2%, which contributed in 5.8 percentage points to the annual variation rate, mainly due to the purchase of other transport material (mainly aeroplanes and parts).


Excluding fuels and lubricants, exports increased 4.7% and imports grew by 19% after increased o 9.1% and 9.5%, respectively, in December 2018.
