CABEÇALHO

The European Commission launched a maritime strategy for the Atlantic Ocean, which outlined a number of areas where we believe that there is scope for EU-level action to support the coastal and maritime economies of the Member States along the Atlantic seaboard.

In the context of the Atlantic Forum, the Portuguese Director-General for Maritime Policy, the Portuguese Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea and the Director-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission, have the pleasure to invite you to participate in the first Event  of the Atlantic Forum, under the theme “Coastal and Deep Sea Natural Resources”, to be held in Portugal, in Faial Island – Azores, on the 21st of September of 2012 (Sociedade Amor da Pátria - Rua D. The Atlantic Forum was established to bring together the key players at both national and regional level to drive this process forward, namely, to support the European Commission in preparing the strategy’s action plan.

As a means to enhance growth and jobs, the momentum of the Atlantic Strategy towards “blue growth” should come through the development of marine renewable energies, new visions for aquaculture production, innovative scientific research, promotion of maritime culture and leisure in the Atlantic, including cruising and nautical sports, seabed mining and associated technologies, bio-technologies and greener shipping and an increase in short-sea shipping.

Please refer to the provisional program of the event (http://ec.europa.eu/maritimeaffairs/policy/sea_basins/atlantic_ocean/atlanticforum/events/horta/index_en.htm) which will be regularly updated with additional documentation in the coming weeks.
