Portugal’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has invited the United States to consider a presence in Sines port, arguing that the harbour will be strategically important as a gateway to Europe.

The head of state also insisted on the importance of the US presence in the Azores and advised them not to leave space, for example, to China, warning that “those who are absent are always wrong. There is going to be a decision on Sines”, said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, adding: “You have to be there when the time is right.”

The president stressed that “the Chinese have a minister to visiting Sines almost every month, and it is not the only case, other Asian countries too,” and said that “it is up to the government to decide when to set the rules for this decision.”

According to Rebelo de Sousa, the US ambassador in Lisbon “is working on it” and “knows that time is running out”. “I think it’s very interesting for you,” he said.
