The French master shoe designer who made stilettos big gives the scoop on the Portuguese city where he has a home.

What was your initial impression of Portugal?


‘I first visited at around age 16. It was beautiful but extremely melancholic, which I discovered afterwards is a trademark of the country. Portuguese people’s favourite word is saudade, which has a complex meaning and roughly translates to “nostalgia” or “longing”. They can speak for hours about that word and what it means exactly; it’s a bit like how the French can speak at length about food.’
