Swiss utility Elektrizitaetswerke des Kantons Zurich (EKZ) and compatriot Smartenergy Invest AG will invest EUR 35 million (USD 41.4m) in the development and construction of a photovoltaic (PV) project in Portugal's Portimao municipality.

The announcement was made on Monday during the ceremony for the laying of the first stone with the participation of Portugal's energy state secretary Joao Galamba and the mayor of Portimao, Isilda Gomes.

Scheduled to become operational in less than one year, the Central Fotovoltaica Morgado de Arge, as it is named, will consist of 110,000 PV panels spread over an area of 100 hectares (247.1 acres).

With a capacity to generate some 90 MWh per year, the solar facility is expected to be able to meet the annual power demand of 7,631 local homes and offset around 34,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.
