The value of the Portuguese retail sector grew by 3.4% in 2018, to a total of €20.95 billion, according to APED, the Portuguese retail association.

APED said that this growth was largely driven by the non-food sector, which grew by 4.3% compared to the previous year, reaching a total sales volume of €8.54 billion.

Food Growth

Food retail was up 2.8% in sales, reaching €12.4 billion last year.

In the food segment, Frozen rose by 6.1%, Fresh and Perishables was up 4.1%, while Ambient Grocery was up 4.0% – the three fastest-growing categories.

Private label sales remained roughly on a par with the previous year, the data showed, recording a slight increase of 0.2 percentage points to 33.6%

According to APED, the data indicates a 'dynamic, sustainable' retail sector, which has contributed to a growth in employment and economic activity in the country.
