We cannot talk about nature in Portugal without immediately mentioning the privilege that we enjoy by living amongst various landscapes classified as world heritage by UNESCO.
The Laurissilva Forest on the Island of Madeira, the Upper Douro Wine growing territory, the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, the Archaeological Sites of the River Côa and the Wine Growing Landscape of Pico Island.
But the beauty of the nature surrounding us has its roots in the diversity of landscapes that coexist, from the parks and nature reserves, to the natural monuments, nearly always to be found in protected areas.
Current Portuguese legislation on Protected areas covers five forms of classification: National Park, Natural Park, Nature Reserve, Natural Monument and Protected Landscape.
