To learn more, to make it better
Portuguese labour force is known for its motivation, adaptability and willingness to work. Despite the raise of the skills of the work force, necessary to shift towards higher value- added and more competitive products, wages continue to be comparatively low.
Between 1976 and 2001, the number of students enrolling in Portuguese universities grew faster than in any other European Union country, increasing by an annual average of almost 6% compared with an average of just over 3% for the pre-enlargement EU of 15 countries. Portuguese institutions now produce more than 4,000 scientific papers a year compared with only a couple of hundred in 1981. In 2001, Portugal joined the restricted group of “countries of excellence” that contribute to the top 10 of the world’s most highly cited scientific publications.
A considerable percentage of Portuguese (42%) are able to hold a conversation in a language other than their mother tongue.
