A multimodal transportation and logistics network

 

The national grid of infrastructures and logistics platforms will underpin Portugal’s natural strengths as the natural gateway into Europe. It comprehends:

 

  • 9 main sea ports in the mainland, all receiving international traffic (the Sines port, one of the largest deep waters ports in Europe, is managed by PSA, Port Authority of Singapore and receives 38% of all cargo ships arriving and departing Portugal, followed by Leixões (20%) and Lisbon (17%);
  • 2 main containers terminals, one at Bobadela and the other at Leixões (Bobadela, located in the outskirts of Lisbon, with direct connection to the Lisbon harbor and Leixões, located inside of the Leixões harbor.
  • Cargo rail network, operated by CP with 4 international rail lines exiting Portugal and a logistic chain, with rail-road-ports terminals spread throughout the country.
  • 3 international airports in the mainland, plus 7 in the islands (Azores and Madeira) with regular daily passenger and cargo flights to all the European countries, America, Africa and Asia.
  • 22.000 km of main roads and one of the highest rates of motorways of Europe. 

Apart from this network, the changes in the energy infrastructure are playing a major role in present Portuguese economy, with one of the highest rates of consumption of clean energy of Europe and big investments in wind, sun and wave power.
